Aging and Staying Relevant: Embracing Wisdom in a World That Overlooks It
In an episode of The One Problem, I had the pleasure of speaking with Margye Solomon, a member of the Ellevate Network and a passionate advocate for staying relevant as we age. Margye, at 70 years old, shared her personal experiences with aging, the challenges of feeling less relevant over time, and the strategies she has developed to combat this issue. Her approach resonates deeply, particularly for those in their 40s, 50s, and beyond.
The Problem: Staying Relevant as We Age
Margye’s central problem is one that many people — especially women — face: staying relevant as we age. As she points out, there comes a time when, regardless of our achievements or experiences, it feels as if what we have to say falls on “deaf ears.” This is especially true in the corporate world or entrepreneurial circles, where younger voices often dominate the conversation.
Margye’s mother warned her about this, recounting how she had to lie about her age to avoid being pushed aside in her career. As a result, Margye began preparing for the challenges of aging early on, but it wasn’t until she entered her 60s that she truly confronted this issue head-on.
