Is Free Information Devaluing Expertise? Finding the Right Balance
These days, people are bombarded with an excess of free information. Whether it’s Wikipedia or YouTube tutorials, we have easy access to knowledge without having to pay for it. But this abundance raises an important question: Do people truly value what they get for free? And for content creators and service providers, such as myself, how much free information is enough before it devalues our paid offerings?
The Double-Edged Sword of Free Content
At first glance, free information seems like an undeniable benefit. It makes knowledge accessible to everyone, promotes self-guided learning, and removes barriers in multiple fields. The open-source software movement has transformed technology development by providing free access to powerful tools.
However, the idea, “information wants to be free” poses its own difficulties.
